Create friends, what do you think of when you think of CREATE?
Arts?
Crafts?
Birthday Parties?
Drop-In Projects?
Camps?
Tween & Pre-Tween Nights?
Ladies Nights? (yes, yes, of course Ladies Nights, but for this post, let's think about the little ones!)
FUN?
MESSY FUN?
YES! Create is all this and more...for kids of all ages, GIRLS & BOYS alike.
Yes, BOYS.
Boys like camp.
Boys like arts & crafts.
Boys have birthdays.
Boys LIKE TO GET MESSY! (I can say that with authority, I have a son and so does Lisa...)
So...
(my point is coming, I assure you)
Create is BOYS AND GIRLS.
We work hard at Create to have something that appeals to every kiddo that walks through our door. When we plan our camps, you can be sure we'll have themes that excite boys and girls alike. The same goes for our birthday parties.
At Create we know that nurturing a love of art and crafting is an important part of being a kid. That every kid deserves to be able to express himself creatively, to think outside the box. To feel confident and proud when they create art. This is what drives us to create an environment where boys and girls can both come, get a little messy and have tons of fun!
But what does Create have for boys, you ask? We have robots, from banks to stuffies to robots made out of tin cans. We have dogs, fish, treasure boxes and telescopes just waiting for your little guy to decorate. We have sports-themed crafts and very cool Sports Camp coming up this summer. Some other camps that might appeal to your little man? Build It Camp, Super Hero Camp, Pirate Camp, Explore the Galaxy Camp...and one you might not expect: Knit & Stitch Camp.
Yes. Knit & Stitch Camp.
We have been thrilled by the number of boys who have shown interest in knitting and sewing. And even more thrilled that we've found they're GOOD AT IT! AND THEY ENJOY IT!
So, the next time you hear the words every momma dreads: I'M BORED! Bring you little guys and gals over to Create for some messy, crafty fun for everyone!

Hello everyone! Yes, I know, I'm one week + 1 day late in the knitted holiday gifts blog post extravaganza. I do apologize for that, but I promise I have some goodies for you this week! I'm posting TWO great patterns to help you get through your knitting list for the holidays!
First off, here's the pic of the headwarmer:
While knitting it, I decided I didn't want a headwarmer- that an earwarmer would be more useful. (Actually I just thought that the pattern looked like a hat with the top chopped off.....) So I stopped at 3.5". Looks perfect to me! Best part of this project? I think I knocked it out in an hour. Yes, you read that correctly- ONE HOUR! That's my kind of holiday gift project! Ok, I've spent enough time talking about that, let me tell you about the NEW projects!
Felted Nesting Bowls:
Skills needed: Cast on, Knitting in Round using the Magic Loop technique, Knit 2 Together, Felting
Download Felted Nesting Bowls pattern
Needles: the pattern recommends anything from a US size 10-11. Just use whatever you have nearby. She does suggest that if you have to buy needles- get a US 10. You will also need circulars in order to knit in the round.
Yarn: Ah yarn! What type of yarn to use on this project. Since these bowls are going to be felted, you have to use 100% wool. No if's and's or but's about it. Nothing felts as well as 100% wool. Brands I like for this: >Brown Sheep (a good ol' Nebraska company!) or Patons Classic. NO Superwash or Acrylic!
Notions: Tapestry needle to weave in ends
Felting: You need a top loading washing machine, mesh bags & jeans. For more details & hints (i.e. how to felt in an HE washer), come to a Sit & Knit & I will help you out!
And because I'm loving the felting process so much...here's the second pattern:
Felted Coffee Cuff:
Skills needed: Cast on, Cast off Knitting in Round using the Magic Loop technique (if you choose, she also wrote instructions for straight knitting), Knit 2 Together, Purl 2 Together, Felting
Download Felted Coffee Cuff pattern from Ravelry. You should be able to download this pattern, even if you are not a Ravelry member, if you can't for some reason, let us know & we will help you out!
Needles: the pattern recommends anything from a US size 10.5 I mine opinion you can use anything between a US size 10-11. You will also need circulars in order to knit in the round.
Yarn: For yarn, I won't bore you with the same spiel from the nesting bowls above- you can actually probably just use your yarn leftovers from that project for this.
Notions: Tapestry needle to weave in ends.
Felting: You need a top loading washing machine, mesh bags & jeans. For more details & hints (i.e. how to felt in an HE washer), come to a Sit & Knit & I will help you out!
Also- don't forget, we've got our Daytime Knit-a-thon from 8am-2pm tomorrow, Thursday Nov. 18 & our monthly evening Knit-a-thon this Friday, Nov. 19 from 6pm to midnight! Hope to see you there!!!

So here we are- right at the beginning of the holiday season. We here at the store & lots of our customers are busy getting ready by making projects, decorating and planning events. We're so busy doing all of this work and getting ready to be even busier, that it's a little overwhelming to think about this season. But wait! Isn't this supposed to be FUN? Shouldn't we be taking the time to ENJOY this time?
We all know what the answer is. We know we should be enjoying the journey & not getting caught up in the hub-bub. But it's hard to do. We know it and no one is more guilty of getting sidetracked than us. So what if we all said "Stop! And took a break from everything & made a set time every week until Christmas to enjoy the journey?
Starting next Sunday afternoon & Tuesday evening, we're going to be hosting "CREATE, Crafts and Chocolate." Every week will have a different theme and we've specifically created projects that are for all levels of craftiness. (So you people who consider yourselves craft challenged- come out of your den! This is doable for you!) Think of this as a laid back time, once a week, to hang out with friends, eat some chocolate and make something in a casual atmostphere. Think of this as your time to get away from the house, the phone, the To Do list & just be.
Are you with us?
Here are the details:
Sundays from 1-4pm & Tuesdays from 6-9pm.
Week of 11/14: Holiday Cards and Tags $1.50-$2/each

Ta da! Here are my facecloths from last week's post:
I'm very happy with how they came out! I added a bar "Soapignon Blanc" from the Napa Soap Company & am sitting here quite smuggly that my first Christmas present is complete. (Let's not look at how long my list of knitted gifts is, because really, I should be much further along- say on knitted gift #5 by this point- let's just be happy I got the first one done now & not in December!)
So what's next on this list? Headwarmers! These are great gifts for the athletes in your life! Add to the fact that these call for about 100 yards of worsted weight wool- they are sure to knit up quickly which make every knitter happy! You can also easily personalize them for the gift recipient by adding a cute pin or flower. This particular pattern can be also be used as a neckwarmer- I always love multi-purpose gifts!
Ok, here are the pattern details.
Skills needed: Cast on, Cast off, Knitting in Round using the Magic Loop technique or Sewing
Download Easy Neckwarmer Headband pattern
Needles: the pattern recommends a size 8. Depending on your yarn & if you're a loose knitter, you may want to try a size 7 needles. She has written this pattern in two ways- one in the round which you will need a circular needle, the other is knitted "straight" with a seamed edge, so you can use a circular or straight needles. (we only sell circular needles at CREATE b/c you can knit in the round & straight with them.)
Yarn: Ah yarn! What type of yarn to use on this project. First, you want to have about 100 yards, then we get into personal preferences. I like wool. Wool is a naturally wicking fiber that keeps you warm, but non-knitters usually find it "itchy." (This is one of those mysteries I don't understand. Probably never will & I just need to move on. But I still don't understand how people can find wool "itchy." It's WARM.) It's also not the friendliest fiber to clean (hand wash, cold, air dry), thus sometimes non-knitters can ruin your present in one wash. Since this thought scares me (freaks me out), I like giving non-knitters projects made out of acrylic. This is better for me & my recipients. My family & friends no longer worry they will ruin a handmade present & I'm reassured they won't ruin my handmade present- everyone's happy!
Notions: Tapestry needle to weave in ends or sew edges together
Ready to go then? Any other questions? Bring them to CREATE tonight from 6:30-8:30 & I will be there to help!

Today is October 26th. To most people that means Halloween is just a few days away. To knitters however, it has a TOTALLY different meaning.
First of all, it means (hopefully) that Fall is here. This is prime knitting season. We're in love. We want to touch warm yarn & knit everyone we know warm cozy clothes. That brings us very nicely to the second point. Christmas is close. I mean it's just around the corner close & shortly I'll be really mad I didn't start my holiday knitting sooner.
See, knitters are inherently nice people. (Don't believe me? Just Google "knitting for charity.") We also like to give things away (that may be partly due to the fact that if we actually kept everything we made, we wouldn't be able to move around in our homes, but I'm getting off topic here). There's something comforting about knowing your loved ones' ears will be warm every morning thanks to the fact you made them a wool hat.
Now some of you might be thinking "but I'm a new/beginner/never picked up needles before knitter- how can I possibly make all those wonderful __ (insert clothing item here) for all my loved ones?" CREATE is here to help you! Every week I'll be posting some of my favorite quick knitting patterns. I'll tell you what skills you need to make them & that night at Sit & Knit, we'll go over any questions you have. All of these projects are intended to be fast, so that every week you can move on to the next!
So what is the pattern this week? Something SUPER simple & useful.
Faceclothes.
Yes, I know my picture looks a little dull, but imagine them in these yarns:
Then add a bar of nice soap, put them in a basket & you have a very reasonably priced gift!
Ok, onto the pattern details.
Skills needed: Cast on, Yarn Over, Knit 2 together, Cast off
Download Grandmother's Favorite pattern
Needles: the pattern recommends a size 6 or 7. If you're a loose knitter, go for the 6's, if you're a tight knitter, grab your 7's. (we have both of these sizes at CREATE)
Yarn: I like Lily Sugar & Cream- they are 100% cotton, affordable, come in a wide variety of colors and you can find them almost everywhere that sells yarn. You can also use any other 100% cotton yarn- Red Heart has some nice eco-cotton- it's most important you choose a cotton yarn & not acrylic. Cotton will be softer on the face.
Ready to go then? Any other questions? Bring them to CREATE tonight from 6:30-8:30 & Robin will be there to help!

Before I start typing, I want to apologize for the lack of photos- something mysterious in my basement (ahem...yarn or fabric I guess), has eaten my camera cord. I have a feeling the only solution to this problem will be a little trip to Best Buy.
Onto knitting. First of all wasn't this past weekend fabulous for knitting? It was the ultimate lay-around-in-my-pjs-on-the-couch-and-knit! I worked on my forever & ever project, the sock yarn blanket, which I will use up all my leftovers from sock yarns!! To see the original Sock Yarn Blankie, take a look at Shelly Kang's. (You have to scroll down quite a ways to see the finished product, but it's well worth it!)
So this morning, when I was packing for Sit & Knit, I realized I have a very large number of unfinished projects in my knitting bag. There's a cardigan which just needs the sleeves finished, my felted pumpkin needs a stem and a preemie hat that needs a top.
Sometimes I wonder how I ended up with so many projects so close to being finished. I never intend for it to get out of control, it just sort of....ends up that way. I used feel bad about having so many unfinished projects. Then it dawned on me on day. Who cares if I have a hundred knitting projects & 50 quilting projects started? Does it really have any large impact on the way the world works? Nope, there's just me in Nebraska with all my fibery goodness. I like being surrounded by my creations.
And to those people who tell me I'll never finish them- I say to them "They will get finished when it's their time and not a moment sooner."
Note: This Friday is Knit-a-thon time!!! 6pm-midnight! Come & knit, crochet, tat or just hang out on the couch & enjoy good food!

wanted to create something extra special but it didn't quite turn out?
First off I know that I should NEVER try a new recipe on guests so why did I think that I should try a new pattern that I have never made before. It seems the more I want it to be perfect the more perfect escapes me.
Second off you should never substitute the first time you make something, because it is more difficult to adjust for substitutions when you are not sure about the end product.
So here I ask myself again why do I do these things? Because I am always SURE that I can do it. Yep I like to just jump in with both feet and work really hard until I succeed. Sometimes it take a bit longer (ok a lot longer) to accomplish my goal then I imagined but I usually get there.
Now you might be asking yourself what the monkey is she telling us this for? The reason is because this says A LOT about me and my personality. The past couple weeks I have spent many moments working on projects that I have not made before but in the end I have come up with some very exciting projects and some wonderful items that have been requested. And here is my latest project that I have completed for a very special customer! I hope she likes it.

Now have I ever told you why I don't bake....

So now that you're all spun up on the right kind of sewing machine to get, what should you make with it?? There are a HUGE variety of patterns out there, everything from quilts and bags to clothes and accessories. After having sewed my fair share of all the above, here are a couple of tips I can give you to prevent you from hating that machine you just spent so much time purchasing:
- Don't start with clothes or knits. I know those baby clothes look adorable & who wouldn't want to dress their toddler in monkey pj's but please just wait. Make some other items first. Trust me.
- Stay away from curves for a while (see number 1)
- Fall in love with cotton fabric. It's less likely to move on you, thus making the whole sewing experience more pleasant.
- Purchase good, shart cutting tools. You want a new pair of scissors, a rotary cutter, ruler & mat. Reserve those tools for fabric only. Hide them if you must to keep others from using them on paper. In my house, it's a well known fact that anyone who uses a cutting tool from my studio on anything besides fabric will face the wrath of Robin! & they will also purchase me a brand new replacement! (Note, we have all these supplies here at CREATE, stop on by & we can talk more about them.)
- Purchase some pins. They a necessary evil, most everyone dislikes working with them, but they really help make the end product look nicer.
Well, that's a good list to start. So again, what to make. Personally, I think one of the best beginner projects are pillowcases. They're simple, don't require a lot of fabric & are useful. Take a look at the great patterns at All People Quilt.
You can actually also start quilting. I know that quilting can sound scary & that you've probably seen the pictures of the quilts with the 2,000 pieces that look perfect & intimidating. But really, quilting is just about the process of cutting up & putting them back together in a way that pleases you. So yes, through that process you can make something like this. But you can also make something like this, or you can make something like this:

A beginner can completely make this quilt. AND I'm teaching this quilt here at CREATE, so you'll have guidance! Go through your closets & pull out 10 pairs of jeans, or head over to a resale shop & pick up some (non-stretch though, you don't want to be sewing stretch jeans, that's not fun). You'll also need matching thread & 2 yards of fleece for backing.
We'll be offering this class two different times this month- the first is tomorrow from Noon-2 & then again on Thursday, September 30, 7-9PM.
So if you've been wanting to learn how to sew, give us a call to reserve your spot! Our staff has the knowledge to get you confidently started on your way to sewing fun!

Hello!!!
Since it's Tuesday, I'll do a little knitting update. The brown socks went to the frog pond (rip it, rip it, rip it). I think they'll just sit in the stash until another great idea comes along. I then decided to do some felting. Found this super cute pumpkin pattern! All my wedges are knitted & am just sewing it together before tossing it into the washer. (Side note here, I love the fact that I'm purposely knitting this pumpkin large & then shrinking it in the washer! Seriously, how many times in life do you get to make something to shrink in the washing machine?)
Ok, onto sewing now. Did you know it is National Sewing Month? Sewing is another hobby I have which I love. I've been sewing since I was a tot. I remember sitting on the floor at my mom's sewing machine pinning her pieces together (I imagine in reality she was re-pinning these pieces before she actually sewed, but it was fun for me to play with the pins on the floor.)
One question I get fairly frequently is what type of machine do I have & what do I recommend for people to purchase. I'm very fortunate in the fact that I have my mom's sewing machine:

It's a Pfaff & while it's coming up on it's 20 year birthday, it still runs like a dream, has more features than I will ever use & is a general workhorse.
Now what would I recommend for people? Well, that really depends. Sewing machines are a lot like cars. You've got everything from the Mercedes to the Model T's. I have the equivilent of an older BMW. A little outdated, but still a good car with probably more do-dads than I really need. So what should you get? Any machine I would purchase today would have:
- Ability to change stitch length & stitch width
- A free arm (this allows you to sew in a circle to form a tube)
- Nice heavy base (just heavy enough so that the machine doesn't move when you sew)
- Thread cutter
- Speed control (this is especially nice if you're a beginner)
- Variety of stitches to include: Straight, Zig zag & Blanket
- Carrying case (this can be purchased separately & you can even get some with wheels)
Now here are some things that are nice to have, but not a necessity:
1. Needle down (instead of hand cranking the needle into the fabric, the machine stops with the needle automatically in the down position)
2. Variety of stitches to include overlocking and buttonhole
3. Machine light enough you can carry it without breaking your back (or I recommend purchasing a rolling case)
So should where to buy your sewing machine? There are lots of options- everything from Target/Walmart to Sewing Machine Dealers to eBay. I wouldn't recommend buying any machine that has a base price of less than $100. You're buying a piece of machinery and to get something that is going to last you, machines under $100 aren't worth the money. I also wouldn't recommend buying a used machine online as you can't be sure what you're going to get & the shipping is going to kill you. Many times dealers have used models you can purchase (from trade-ins when customers upgrade).
So what are the brands can you purchase? Here are some big names: Pfaff, Bernina, Janome, Brother, Elna, Babylock, Viking, Kenmore and Singer. From this point, it's really about personal preference. Go try out the machines. Do they feel smooth to you? Do they provide enough light? Does it feel comfortable?
The most important thing I can say about purchasing a machine is to test drive it first! You wouldn't purchase a car without first driving it, so make sure to give that sewing machine a spin.
All this being said, a sewing machine is still a big investment. It can be a little daunting. So before you spend the money on one, ask around your family if someone has one you can borrow. We also have one here at the store you can come in and use (just give us a call beforehand so we can reserve it for you) for the studio cost of $3/hr; $8/day max.
In my next post, I'll start talking about what beginners should start sewing. Picking the right project will have EVERYTHING to do with how much you come to love sewing!

Hello happy CREATE blog readers!
This is Amy checking in to chat with you about what has become a positive OBSESSION with me.
(and I'm not kidding when I say OBSESSION...truly I am obsessed.)
About what, you ask?
Jewelry.
Specifically, MAKING JEWELRY.
What girl doesn't LOVE jewelry? Even if you're not one to accessorize yourself to the nines, there has to be a piece or two that is near and dear to your heart. A wedding ring, a brooch that belonged to your grandma, even that macaroni necklace your child made you in Kindergarten that you lovingly wear each Mother's Day!
But I digress...
Let me tell you. Once you learn the basics, jewelry making it terribly & wonderfully addictive. And, shhhh, not that hard.
Really. I promise you. In fact, come in & let me show you.
Because making cute, custom, one-of-a-kind pieces that match YOUR personal taste is something you can do. Whether you have a super clean, simple style or you like to bling out, you can learn to make your own jewelry. Check out these pieces we've made lately: a simple vintage button ring, handmade bead earrings, bottle cap pendants, a bracelet just perfect for fall, and a layered drop necklace.

Tempting, isn't it?

Over the weekend I was able to finish my grey socks- they were easy, there were no issues and overall they were a dream to knit. Add to the fact that I knit those suckers in 1 week & I was feeling pretty proud of myself!
So I should have known it wouldn't last. I really should have.
It was Sunday morning. I was sitting on the couch & I wanted Fall to be here. Now. Right NOW! I wanted to be able to bundle up in warm knits & have a quilt on me. So because I have a few more weeks to go before I can enjoy those cool days, I thought I would bring some Fall into my life by knitting brown socks. A nice pair of brown socks in the traditional gansey pattern. I knew this would help me get through the last few hot days of August. Everything was going great! I changed the pattern (of course) from top down to toe-up, added a short row heel, but really, these aren't big changes. And besides, I'm a grown up knitter. I should be able to make simple changes to a sock pattern.
Well, then the fates decided to give me a little lession in humility.
Somehow, beyond my wildest imagination, everything that could be wrong with these socks, has gone wrong. You may want to ask me, "Robin, are you REALLY sure everything's wrong? You're not possibly being a little dramatic here?" And I will answer you with "No, I'm not being a perfectionist here, I really have managed to botch up these socks."
So what's wrong?
- For starters they're too tight around my foot (so stupid on my part. I know from experience that I like the feel of socks that have 72 stitches. I decided however to follow the pattern here & cast on 64- you know 8 less than normal, or in terms of gauge, an ENTIRE inch less (8 stitches approx. equaling 1 inch) around my foot)
- Then somewhere I messed up the diamond pattern, so one set of triangles is "smooshed" up & looks strange to me. (Ok, so maybe I'm being a little petty here & probably no one else would notice my one row of smooshed diamonds.)
- I started the heel too soon (even though I measured my foot & it's the same length I always knit my feet) & so the sock feels even smaller (hmmm, suddenly I'm thinking that if I have less stitches overall around my foot, my foot should overall be knitted for a bit longer to make up room for the amount of expanding the sock has to do to get around my foot. I hate it when there's some science-y theory that pokes it's head & laughs at me while knitting.)
- Completely messed up the pattern at one side of my sock. (Still have no idea how this was done- really Robin, at the END of the rows??)
- Now I'm working on the cuff & for some unknown reason, I have these random stitches at the ends of my rows. Note to non-knitters, this isn't good. I go to check my stitches. Yup, I've got 64 just like the pattern says. How many stitches are in my pattern? 7 stitches. Hmmm, what a second here, does 7 divide evenly into 64?" I run to find calculator & low & behold guess what. It doesn't.
Lesson here: If I'm going to redo pattern, I should learn to check the stitch pattern itself to begin with- you know, to make sure I'm starting off good.
I've had my lesson in humility & I will now rip out my sock.....
Or maybe I'll just start a new project.....

It all started a week ago today..."the idea." A tiny thought that turned into something much bigger and by bigger I mean ginormous. Has this ever happened to you?? A little idea that just pops out of your mouth before you knew it and the boss says "ok! Let's CREATE an event on Facebook." So the event is CREATed on Facebook, you invite friends...ok, lots of friends, you go ahead and publish it then people start to respond yes, maybe and no. Oh my heck, you start to get excited that they just might actually come.
Now what? We make an example, take a picture and add it to the event. We make a list and check our supplies that we think we will need. Paint...check, puffy paint...check, t-shirts...check, fabric medium...check and some glitter...check. 4 PM on Monday rolls around and some peeps start to show up, then some more and a few more. No problem. Everything seems to be going very well. The RED & BLACK paint are flowing, the stencils are being CREATed as needed, the puffy paint is puffing out and the glitter is blinging everywhere. Wow, this is AWESOME! Before going home for the day all supplies are double checked and the boss goes for additional supplies and more t-shirts. Whew!
Tuesday rolls around and at 330 peeps start to show up, LOTS of peeps all at the same time. Stencils are being made slowly, paint is being prepped and girls are designing their shirts. You stroll in excited for the fun that began 30 minutes ago without you. You jump right in and try to keep up. Shoot we forgot to put masking tape on the list so a quick trip to ACE gets you right back on track. The boss shows up with more supplies because now we are out of RED & BLACK paint. No problem. More peeps keep on coming. Again at the end of the night supplies are checked and a new list CREATed for the next day.
Wednesday rolls around and a shipment with more glitter arrives just in time because we were almost out of the cool, silver glitter. More peeps come but not as many as the day before so it is easier to keep up with all the requests. But you guessed it at the end of the day we are out of paint again so the boss goes for more paint and more t-shirts.
Thursday goes by pretty tame. The boss even handles it all by herself. Several reservations for Friday night are taken. Coolio! This is working out GREAT!
Friday rolls around with more calls for mother/daughter night, a call that grandma is going to drop off 2 older grandkids, their is a stamp club booked for one area and the girls are coming in to make more football shirts. No problem there are extra people working tonight at CREATE. That is a good thing because the place is hopping!!!
Saturday comes and with it a few more girls to make their shirts. YES!!! This has been an AWESOME week.
We aren't quite sure but we think somewhere around 50 shirts were decorated this week at CREATE. When the boss said ok last Saturday we never imagined that we would go through so much paint that we would have to go buy more twice or that we would go through all the masking tape we had plus 4 more rolls or that we would use most of every kind of glitter we had or that we would make somewhere around 200 stencils of names, numbers and even a few antlers. We didn't realize that 8 loads of laundry would need to be done or that just about every surface would need to be scrubbed down to remove the glitter, glue and paint or that we would wash all of our brushes several times over each day or that we would all be exhausted at the end of the week. All in all there were quite a few things we didn't think about but for our first time things run fairly smooth.
Ok now having typed all this and having survived the week of AWESOME, I wouldn't change a thing. Now there are a few things we as a team we will do differently next time but overall I am so glad and proud of what we handled this week. I am so glad that I said OK to that little idea!
All of this from one little idea by one little Senior... Thank you so much for sharing that idea with me!!!
GREAT JOB!!
Thank you to the whole team for sticking together and making the week a success for everyone.
Thank you to every single person who took a chance on us this last week and come in to CREATE this last week. We had so many wonderful visits and so much fun!! Thank you and I hope to see everyone again soon. ~Lisa

Since last Tuesday, I've finished my orange socks! They came out so well! I did a short row heel this time around & I think that's my new preferred heel of choice. Why you might ask? Because it's FAST! With a 'regular' heel, you have to pick up stitches and deal with the whole gusset increases or decreases. The short row heel doesn't require NEARLY as much work. This leads to socks being finished faster & ultimately, more projects completed. Yup, that's my new plan for heels.
Last Friday night was our monthly Knit-a-thon (couldn't make it? Mark your calendars for September 24, 6-midnight, $15!) My plan was the finish the fabulous orange socks, but that wasn't meant to be as it became apparant I can't knit & talk at the same time (you know those nights- sometimes it's just not happening.) So I pulled out a skein of yarn I've had for a few years that I've been meaning to do make into something. It's a beautiful handspun, hand dyed bamboo/silk blend "art yarn" from Molly Miller by Appointment .
Handspuns like this aren't something I usually purchase, but this one struck me. Then it just sat in my closet- because it's NOT something that I normally knit. I like fine yarns (size 1 needles are my favorite!) and projects that require 1,000 yards of wool. Artyarns come in skeins of about 60-90 yards and need to be knitted on needles between sizes 15 & 17. Well the store recently received size 17 needles (these are nice ones too! and not badly priced at $5.99 ;). Anyways, I now had the perfect needles for this yarn & I needed a simple garter stitch project, so last Friday night I whipped up this little guy:

For being a yarn (and stitch) that I normally don't use, this was a nice change. I also have to admit that starting and completing a project in one night was nice as well!
But then I went back to socks (who was I kidding? The giant needles were nice, but size 1's have my heart!).

These you might notice are NOT any of the patterns I was looking at last week. I was looking through a sock book of mine, got distracted & had to start this pattern! I used another Paper and Yarn colorway (Smokey Sea) & although there is a little pooling, I'm still in love! Already past the heel on sock one & I'm ready for sock #2!

The knitting needles have been clicking away lately (mostly because I'm too tired to leave the couch in the evenings) & I wanted to show you all my latest project- socks!
Some of you might know how crazy I am about socks. I've knitted tons & tons of socks- toe up, cuff down, eye of partridge heel, short row heel, even a fair isle pair. But I actually haven't made ANY socks for quite some time!
But last week I got a hankering to browse my drawer of sock yarns & I found a great orange yarn hand dyed by Paper & Yarn . It's a wonderful vibrant orange that expressed how incredibly HOT the weather had been! I went off to my favorite sock book author, Charlene Schurch & found the perfect pattern & off I was & running!
Yesterday evening I finished the first sock:

And in order to fend off Second Sock Syndrome (SSS), I immediately cast on for sock #2!

I have to say I'm so excited about how these are turning out! I can't stop thinking about my next pair of socks......maybe Broadripple? or Falling Leaves? or maybe Sunday Swing??
Decisions, decisions.....

Here at our store, we've got all sorts of cool products you can use to add that "something" to your art. Tim Holtz is one of those designers with those products. If you're not familiar with him (I wasn't until I started working here), he's a big wig in the scrapbooking world & he has an entire line of inks, stamps, paper, the whole nine yards.
But what makes his stuff so amazing is his perspective. He combines a little vintage and a little grunge with a bit of fun to make products that trigger a memory and make you smile.
Take his Tecture Fades.
These are used with the Sizzix machine (don't have one? Come use ours!) and create an embossed effect. Never used a Sizzix machine before? Never fear, it's easy peasy. (Trust me. Even if you've never scrapbooked a day in your life, you can walk in the store & master the Sizzix machine!) He's got designs of tree bark, bingo cards, rays, dots, all sorts of themes that can be used as the basis for cards, tags, a bit of art journaling or in a mixed media canvas piece.
He also has these great stamps!

I love his quotes, the birds and the whimsical flourishes. You can use these with regular ink pads, or use his distress inks for an "aged" look.
So I invite you to come in & browse the Tim Holtz products- I'm sure you'll find something to inspire you.....

Have I ever mentioned that we have a "professional" tie dyer at CREATE? Well it all started months ago when I met this young lady named Grace. Now Grace had come in as a birthday party guest but little did I know she would become one of our most frequent guests or one of our BEST Tie Dyers.
First off I must admit that prior to opening CREATE I don't recall ever actually tie dying anything myself. But Wendy convinced me that tie dying was easy peasy. So like most things these days I decided to give it a try. If it is on You Tube surely I can do it...remind me one day to tell another You Tube story. So I order some spray bottle of fabric paint colors and off we went towards tie dying. And you know what, it for the most part turned out fabulous and quite colorful.
Now back to Grace...the first time she came in to tie dye I think she was a bit overcome with the paint fumes and added a bit too much color to her shirt. The next time she came in she made the most AWESOME swirls and then the fumes took over again and the colors started calling out "Add more, Add more", so she did. By the next time Grace was beginning to get a really good ideas of what worked and what didn't. So she starts in, some color here, a burst there, a stencil, a tid bit more color ...then the fumes start to take over but a gentle reminder that sometimes less is more and she regains control. The end result was a beach towel of beautiful colors that resembled Grace's personality and spirit.
Now fast forward several weeks..Tie Dye Extravaganza Part 2. Grace is NO LONGER overcome by the fumes and beautiful, professional tie dye pieces of art are being produced one after another. Just call her "Colorful Swirls" the next time you pass her. Thank you Grace for helping us find the way to a more colorful world! ~Lisa

Hi everyone
I hope that everyone is having an AWESOME Father's Day!!!
It has been a bit since I have taken the time to write you a note. During this last week have had LOTS of new customers come into our store! I want to thank each of you who have passed our name on to a friend. Word of mouth is our biggest way of getting new customers so THANK YOU for helping us pass the word. Please keep up the great talking.
This past week we made gift after gift for Father's Day. We made so many of a few items that we actually ran out of some things!!! Again thank you.
We have had some VERY fun campers come to CREATE with us. We have been creating clay pieces, jewelry, scrapbooks and more jewelry. Watch for more fun things coming soon. We are also planning some day camps coming late July to early August. Anything you would like to see, let us know??
We have also started a Pre-Tween, Tween and Teen nights each month. Tween night was FULL with 36 young ladies! Pre-Tween had an excellent showing for the first one with 25 kids. We even managed to have 6 very happy teens by the end of our first Teen night. Here are a few highlights from Tween night last night.

Summer camps started this week and I couldn't be having more fun! I have three awesome girls making jewelry with me all week in Bangles and Baubles Camp. Lillian, Isabella, and Caprice have been spicing up the store with their giggles, jokes and smiles- not to mention their amazing jewelry creations.
On the first night of camp, I showed the girls all the tools used for making jewelry. It was so fun to show them the right way to hold the pliers and watch them squeal every time they successfully opened a jumpring! After a good dosage of sugar and a few games, they got to play around with polymer clay and made beads and pendants that, I'm sure, are going to turn into awesome jewelry later this week.
Yesterday was a little more challenging; I taught the girls how to make earrings and rings. After much practice (and a little bit of cheating) they all had 2-3 sets of earrings that they were very excited to wear. I admit that, after the time it took to make the earrings, I was a little worried that we wouldn't get to finish making our rings. But BOY was I wrong! Once the girls got to ditch their pliers and wrap wire by hand, they were naturals! I can't tell you how impressed I was by the rings these girls made. Seriously, I would wear these! They are looking forward to Friday when they get to spend the whole day making whatever they want. Lilly and Bella even picked out beads to "hide" for that day so they could make more rings without anyone using their favorite beads first.
Probably my favorite part of camp is when the parents come to pick up the kids (NO- don't think I'm saying I like to see them go! LOL). It's because they run out to show their parents all the cool stuff they made! It's hard to describe the joy it gives me when I see kids beaming with pride in the artwork that THEY made ALL BY THEMSELVES! To know that I was there to guide them along the way just makes it even more satisfying. To top it all off, I even got a hug last night from one of my campers :') I can't wait for the next session (we're going to make bracelets and necklaces tomorrow) so I can see Lilly, Bella, and Caprice impress themselves and each other with the awesome jewelry they're sure to make!

The great thing about a 3 day weekend is that there is enough time to actually shut the brain down, sleep, see the family and re-activate the creative side of my brain. I actually finished reading "My Sister's Keeper" and 1/3 of the CREATive Entrepreneur.
I started reading this HUGE stack of idea books that seemed to somehow have jumped into my hand at the book store recently. I am thinking that a bit of experimenting with different things couldn't hurt me. You know the things that have jumped into my hand at certain craft stores that I have NO idea what to do with. Somehow all those cool things go together onto a canvas. Now I know I mentioned finding Catherine who not only knows what to do with these products but she makes them all look beautiful together. Catherine is going to offer a series of classes next month on collage and mixed media but it couldn't hurt me to get a start on mixing stuff up a bit, RIGHT? At least this is not science so nothing should explode...I think.
OMG!! I also discovered this AWESOME tutorial about how to do this collage picture thing. I am going to pick out my kids pictures to use next. It will be a GREAT gift for Father's day. I will practice today and let you know how it goes. Hopefully I can teach you how to do it tomorrow.
Stay tuned for results of my experimenting today. The good, the bad and hopefully NOT the ugly!! ~Lisa

Do you ever wonder where in the heck all the papers come from? Because I do, constantly!!! We are suppose to be a paperless society & recycle friendly so why do I still have so many papers??
I try to go through the mail as I come in and deposit junk mail in the recycle bin as I come into the house. Then they usually get set on the kitchen island among well, you guessed it more papers. My husband uses the tall part of the island for all his paper and the kids just deposit theirs ... any where. This has become our bad paper cycle of life at the Waddell house.
I have tried to break it, I have yelled, I have tossed papers and none of these things seem to help. Maybe it is time for a new system, one with labels (I do like labels) and a place for everything. Jenie come on in and set it up. I promise to follow it if someone will just make it easier. Oh heck back to reality. Maybe I just need some paper therapy because this seems to be a constant thorn in my side.
Does any one know a good paper therapist? Please send them my way without any additional paper please.
Oops I am not sure what this has to do with CREATE except that there are a whole bunch of papers that come with the business too. I do have most of them filed into little folders...I think.

One of my favorite customer reactions is when they walk in and simply get the whole concept of CREATE before we explain anything. I mean really, really just get it!!! It usually goes a bit like this "aaaaahhhhhhhhh ... you guys do a little bit of everything" while shaking their head in a affirmative way and trying to take everything in all at once.
I mention this today because I want to share with you a beautiful creation made by one of our customers that just "gets us and loves to come visit". I remember the first time Kim walked into CREATE, ok not the second she walked in but I remember Amy talking with her and showing her our new Tim Holtz pendants that we were working on at the time. Kim LOVED them and special ordered one for herself saying she would pick it up the next day. Quietly Amy and I were squealing on the inside because not only did Kim like the store but she also wanted to order something we had made. YEAH!!
When Kim returned she brought a friend with her to see our wonderful little store. After they walked around talking and checking the place out Kim booked her Birthday Party here with 8 of her closest friends. More squealing on the inside because this was to be our very first adult birthday party at CREATE. We were so excited and couldn't wait for Kim and her friends to come in to make the very same Tim Holtz pendant Kim had first fallen in love with. (Now remember I am over 40 and sometimes get a few things mixed up so I am sorry if I messed up any of the details here. )
The next week comes and Amy has a family emergency so I prepare to teach the class by myself. No problem I say as I prepare the supplies and set up the tables for the party. The ladies start to arrive, the snacks get laid out, the ladies start chatting....more chatting...while they are visiting I get a bit nervous what if I forgot something or don't know the answer. Ok now keep in mind I do like to prepare and by prepare I mean I had so many options out it was hard for some to make a decision. And well if I forgot anything, I don't think they noticed between the snacks and chatting. Whew! Kim and her friends all completed their projects, had a great time and learned just how crafty they could be. As I clean up I think WOW what a great group of friends......not expecting to see them again for a bit.
Saturday of the same week while I was working on something, I look up when the door opens and in walks Kim and 4 young ladies. They are here to make a project because Kim wanted to share her experience with her daughters and their friends. They all end up making more Tim Holtz pendants. While the girls work on their pendants Kim and I talk about the License Plate purse. Kim really wants to make this purse but she want to share this experience with some friends.
Fast forward a couple weeks...Kim brings in her Mother-in-law to show her CREATE. They mention they are planning a Girls Night out since dad and the boys all went camping. Around 630 I glance up to see Kim, Nana, Taylor, Morgan and Sydney want in. I get up to greet them. The 3 girls decide they want to make paper beads and paper pendants. Kim is going to make a charm bracelet and Nana wants to make a necklace. Well we don't have all the parts for the necklace so Nana helps Kim make her bracelet and I help the girls make paper beads. About 9 PM Kim looks outside and exclaims "OMG is is dark out". After a few chuckles they decided to go get some dinner then come back to finish. They invite Wendy and myself along. They are so fun and laid back!! We just feel so welcomed into their group!! Back to CREATE to finish the necklaces.
A few days later Kim and Nana are back to fix a couple tiny things on Kim's bracelet (this time I let the wire wrapping guru Molly take a look at it). Nana is ready to make her necklace because between the additional things I had found and the things she had found we now had all the pieces. When they prepare to leave I give Nana a great big hug because she will be flying back to CA. This time I remember to take pictures of their creations.
Kim's beautiful bracelet has 3 different chains and approx. 15 charms, 4 of which have the picture of her gorgeous children in them. I will mention that Kim LOVED this bracelet so much she couldn't even wait for the glue to try before she put it right back on her wrist. :-))
Nana has made a wonderful, vintage, mixed necklace. It is simply gorgeous with a little bit of everything she loved.

Thank you ladies!!! I can't wait for our next CREATive adventure! ~Lisa

I must confess that I hate to write, journal, and type so please be forgiving as you read my typos, grammar errors and long run on sentences. I usually pass all of these typing, wordy jobs onto to... well anyone who will do them. Today I am going to stepped outside my comfort zone and share a piece of me with you.
Have you ever really wanted to learn something? You buy all the books, you research it online, you buy all the tools and products that the books and research tell you, you need. And then...well it sits...waiting and waiting for...inspiration to hit (like a lightning bolt, I guess). Well I have done this with a few things...ok a lot of things. Why do I do this?? I don't know but if you know please send that lightning bolt my way.
Are you asking yourself why in the heck is this lady telling me this?? Well yesterday I met someone who knows what I want so very much to know. Not only does she know what I want to know but she actually does it. When she started pulling things out of her box to show me, I was ready to see anything but WOW I was not prepared to LOVE most of it and then want to do it to. Not only do I want to learn how to do but I must learn how to do and I want everyone to know about it because I think it is soooooo cool. It looks like the kind of art I have seen in magazines & online and now I have seen it in person. So next I feel the need to create some of my own.
So now what do I do??? Well I choke a bit and ask her more questions. She has so many wonderful ideas and she is talking a beautiful language that goes right along with all my original ideas for CREATE.
I want to join her in her adventure but do I dare...
Well if I have learned anything over the last 6 months, I have learned that it is always best to sleep on something and then decide. I have also learned that I can't predict the future any more than I can predict what my customers will like or will want to do. All I can do is pray and take a leap of faith...
So what did I decide to do?
Well first off I didn't sleep on it, I was way too excited. I did think about it for the afternoon before leaping but then I leaped BIG time. So I would like to welcome our new mixed medium artist Catherine to CREATE. She has some truly amazing ideas that we will be trying out during the month of June. I have three pictures of her work that I would like to share with you today. Then more will be coming out soon along with classes for youth, adults and mom/daughter.

$344 is how much money we raised today for CureSearch.
We put on our pink thinking caps and came up with several fun things that we could do to help Paige raise money for her TEAM. We did not let the cloudy weather dampen our spirits as we prepared for the day's activities. Slowing the families and friends began to drop by to support Paige. We did some paint flicking and dripping like Jackson Pollock. I am not sure who had more fun the kids or the adults as they blew bubbles and popped them on the front of their cards. T-shirts and tote bags were stenciled, sprayed, dripped on and made into a master pieces. Sam & Louie's Pizza donated pizza for us to sell, Mindy brought brownie and Hannah brought some cookies for us all to eat. I almost forgot about the beautiful chenille flower rings we all made from pipe cleaners. All and all I do believe everyone had a GREAT time. Thank you for supporting children's cancer research and the "Think Pink for Paige" Team. Hope to see all of you at the Omaha Walk for CureSearch in June.

I tried art journaling for the first time the other night. I didn't have enough time to finish my page but I got the background done. I have to admit there is something very cool about putting a paintbrush in my hand and a blank page in front of me. Something about the lightness of swishing my brush back and forth makes me want to sing and I DO NOT SING. Just ask anyone who know me I do not sing or dance because I couldn't catch the beat if it jumped on me. I tried this fan brush that was so light and swishy it just kind of took off all on it on for a short time I forgot about everything else and just painted. I totally recommend that you come and try it with us next time. I hope to have my page finished before then...

Every Tuesday morning, from 10:15 to 11:15, CREATE hosts Let's Get CREATive, a wonderfully interactive art time for your little ones. During past Let's Get CREATive sessions, the kids have enjoyed painting and stamping with found objects such as paper towel rolls, halved apples & potatoes, we've made finger puppets out of felt and created noodle art collages!
Next Tuesday, February 2nd, we will be creating Valentine's Day card holders and we'll also make some simple sweet treats that you can share with your family and friends! We look forward to creating with your kids!

This Friday, January 29th, is Buy-One-Get-One! Purchase a seat for yourself and bring a friend. Or two. Or more...we would love to have you! Just mention the BOGO offer when you make your reservation. Hurry! Space is limited!
On Saturday evening, CREATE hosted the Christ Community Church MOPs group Annual Pajama Party! From 7pm until midnight, the ladies chatted & laughed, created, played games, took advantage of our free WiFi, chatted, laughed & created some more, and of course, ate! It was the first visit to CREATE for most of the ladies and they loved the store. We received some wonderful compliments. Theresa T. said she loved how warm and inviting CREATE is; when you walk in it feels like walking into someone's home! It felt so good to hear that, since that is exactly the atmosphere we strive for here at CREATE! Many of the ladies brought their own crafty projects to work on. Debbie C. was making cards and was really impressed with the selection of stamps CREATE has that are available for our customers to use. Jana M. took advantage of our Janome 8077 sewing machine to add some stitched detail to her wedding album. Elizabeth P. loved our selection of scrapbook papers and vintage alphabet embellishments and created three adorable clipboards for each of her children. Shanna B. & Neely M. both worked on knitting projects. Some of the women chose to settle in on the couches in our cozy conversation area and just enjoy an evening out, knowing the kiddos were safe at home with Dad! I chatted with nearly everyone and answered tons of questions about what we do here at CREATE, handed out calendars and fliers about our upcoming Grand Opening and talked about all the cool classes we have for both kids and adults. The evening was a stellar success and we can't wait to see ladies of CCC MOPs again!

Monday was a day off from school and this young lady worked hard over the weekend so that she could come to CREATE and make a project as her mom promised. Kenya is the most polite young lady to ever show up here so far.... She is also a regular here at CREATE. Kenya has attended several Tween Nights as well as several project days. So many things to mention where to I start... Well first we have hired two high school art students to help us and you with ... well, everything. They have brought in a few of their art pieces for us all to enjoy. So a BIG welcome to Vikki and Kyle!!!
We hosted our first demonstrator party on Friday night. Juice Plus and Hyp Yoga joined together to tell everyone about their products. They had about 25 women come and join them for an evening of snacks and information in our work room. By the end of the evening we were talking about having yoga every Monday night here at CREATE. So we will work at the time and yoga class will begin Mon., Jan. 25 here.
Our Grand Opening is coming up Jan. 31 - Feb. 6. We will have prizes, free demos, special pricing on some classes and plus some NEW classes with new products. So if you haven't stopped by and picked up some referral cards yet you should. The cards give the new customer a FREE day in the workroom and plus your name will go into the drawing box for prizes during Grand Opening week.
Coming soon tri-fold display boards for class projects. We also have about 20 different Cricut cartridges with hundreds of shapes, alphabets and more to help you create you display. Watch for examples in the store soon.
Ok that is all for now but check back frequently because there is so much more in the works than I can type at one time. Thanks for reading Lisa

Did you know that used dryer sheet can be used to make art? Well that is what it says in the book I am reading and I think we should give it a try. So here is what you do...collect used dryer sheets. Wash them in hot water with a bit of dish soap. Wring out as much water as you can then lay them out to dry. Then bring them into CREATE and we will test this theory. Give us a quick buzz so we can get the supplies ready then head on over. 933.4446

The PVC’s in the clay are toxic to you and your food. So please bring in your finished projects to Create to put in their oven. Thanks and think great thoughts………

Today we decided to try a little marble painting. It was enjoyed by all ages. I believe we may have some true artists among us!

Then we decided to try a little mixed media on canvas board. Boy did we have a good time making our own clay and molding it to form hair, mermaid tails, trees and more. We even made a few more DIY Pet Gifts. There is nothing like watching the shrinky dinks shrink up in the oven. It was quite a day. Thank you Snow Buddies for Crafting with me today.

The girls that showed up for the Polymer Clay Jewelry Class decided to make their own creations and boy oh boy did they. Here is a look at 2 of the 3 projects.

Dakota is still working on finishing her piece of Lily our puppy.
Next we had a Glass Fusing Glass with Lori. There were 7 people that showed up to make their own unique pendant or bracelet. I can't wait to see the end results next Monday. I will try to remember to post pictures of the finished products.
At the same time we had people come in for DIY Pet Gifts and we had such a great time just crafting. We made frames, puppy ornaments, shrinky dink tags and dog rope toys.

As we prepare to begin our month long "Have Yourself a DIY Holiday" all the Creatologist have been busy researching and testing DIY ideas. We have glue, glitter, and magazines ... well everywhere. But the good news is we are coming up with ideas for pets, teachers, bffs, parents and so much more. We can't wait to start rolling out the DIY projects on Thurs. Watch for new and exciting thinks everyday.
We are going to put up our Christmas tree tomorrow but all we have to put on the tree so far are lights and a beautiful paper chain. Is there anyone out there that could help us decorate the CREATE tree? Maybe if we all work together to make a few ornaments we can make the CREATE tree beautiful together. For each handmade ornament brought in for our tree we will enter your name in a drawing for a super special Christmas drawing from CREATE. Prize to be announced soon.
Please feel free to stop by anytime and see how things are coming along. I hope everyone received their copy of the NEW e-newsletter this week telling them about the "Have Yourself a DIY Holiday" and the kickoff weekend coming up. It was truly a wonderful day blessed with visits from many friends. Thank you to all of you that dropped by!! We received 4 boxes of freight on Thursday and 12 more on Friday which we rushed to put away before our Halloween Party on Sat. from 3-5 pm. We had a fabulous little turn out for the party.
